Why Do Babies Spit Up?

Why Do Babies Spit Up?

Spit-up is a reflux of food and liquids that travels from a baby’s stomach to their mouth. This is a normal part of a baby’s development. About half of babies spit up during their first four months and may persist through a baby’s first year of life.

Causes of Spit-Up:

  • Overfeeding
  • Underdeveloped esophageal sphincter
  • Baby Positioning

Because a baby’s stomach and esophageal sphincter (the valve between the stomach and the esophagus) are small and not yet developed can lead to spit-up especially if a baby is overfed.

Because babies lie on their backs a lot, food and liquids don’t efficiently digest also causing spit-up

5 Tips to help Reduce Spit-Up

  • Try reducing the size of the meals while increasing the frequency
  • Slow down the flow of feeding
  • Try a smaller nipple size on a baby bottle
  • Hold your baby upright during and after feeding
  • Try switching baby formula

If your baby is experiencing other stomach and digestive issues you may want to try a probiotic.
